On February 17th and 18th, 1996, thanks to the power of the Internet, our Portugese cousin, Fred, and his friend, Ana, visited with Janet Somsen and her children John Jr., Jane Strong and Joanne Rappaport in Avon, Connecticut. This visit was the culmination of a correspondence that began in Spring, 1995, when Fred contacted John using the Internet to see if we were related. After much e-mail back and forth and swapping of family geneologies, we determined that we were, in fact, sixth cousins.
With Fred's help, this set of web pages evolved and further relatives have been contacted. After thinking that there were only twenty Somsen's in America and a few in Holland, we've discovered about 1000 living all over the world. The enormous amount of work being done by Derk and Theo Somsen in the Netherlands and by Arlene in Baldwin, Wisconsin, has also added greatly to this effort.
